Day Therapy can offer a real lifeline to patients, especially those living alone.
Moira, 88 years old, has been attending Day Therapy for around 6 months.
"Day Therapy has made such a difference to me. I live alone and whilst I see my family every day there are still times that I feel lonely. Everyone here is so welcoming; from the staff to volunteers and all of the other patients – everyone remembers your name and asks about you. That was one of the things I noticed when I first came; I was introduced to everyone, and they all wanted to talk to me."
An average visit to Day Therapy sees Moira being collected from her home by a volunteer driver, an interactive session with quizzes, games and wordsearches, a 3-course, home cooked lunch, an afternoon of conversations, laughter and fun before being returned home.
"Day Therapy for me is about friendship. We laugh, we have fun, we share experiences, but one of the things I enjoy the most is conversation. I like to talk to people, and these sessions give me time to talk to other people in similar circumstances to myself. Conversation is important to me; I can honestly say I would be lost if I didn’t come here.’
‘I have several health issues including severe arthritis in my arm, the hospice has arranged for me to have shoulder and neck massages with a Complementary Therapist. Some days I struggle to lift my arm, and I’ve found this really helps with the pain."
Moira really enjoys the Animal Therapy sessions, the hospice has regular visits from PAT dogs, alpacas, ponies and even lizards! Moira also loves arts and crafts and poetry sessions.
Moira added "I’m not able to drive any more so being collected and dropped back home really helps. I attend every week, and I really do look forward to coming, I look forward to spending time with people I see as my friends. The care I receive from Beaumond House is excellent, it really is a special place."
